Your Guide To Permanent Eyeliner: What Is an Eyeliner Tattoo?

Getting your eyeliner perfect can be a struggle for even the most seasoned of makeup wearers – so why not get it perfected permanently by a professional PMU Artist? From bold striking wings to subtle lash enhancements, there are so many options when it comes to permanent eyeliner, so read on and discover the process from start to finish.

What is permanent eyeliner?

Permanent eyeliner is a PMU (permanent makeup) treatment that involves using a specialised tattoo machine to implant pigment on the lash line to replicate the look of eyeliner. The treatment, also known as an eyeliner tattoo, can be applied in a variety of styles, including larger strong wings, light lash enhancements, or smokey looks in many colours.

What are the benefits?

Many people opt for a permanent eyeliner treatment because it adds definition to the lash line – which can be great for those who have lost their lashes or want a subtle enhancement. Alternatively, a bolder eyeliner look can save time for those with busy lifestyles and looks great for holidays – no more smudged eye makeup! The treatment is very popular with clients who may struggle to create symmetry in their makeup due to shaky hands or loss of vision.

What are the different styles of permanent eyeliner?

The most commonly requested styles are:

  • Lash enhancement – subtle definition through the lash line with a soft blend
  • Winged liner – a wing or flick extends out above the crease of your lids on the outer corners
  • Shaded liner – a soft, smokey line diffusing out from the lash line like smudged pencil
  • Butterfly liner – a bold look, with shading through the lash line, up onto the lid and through the crease

Artists may refer to permanent eyeliner styles differently, so it is always best to have a thorough consultation – and don’t be afraid to bring inspiration photos!

How long do eyeliner tattoos last?

Permanent eyeliner can last between 3-5 years. This can change depending on age, lifestyle, skin type, etc. As with all PMU, it is recommended that you have a colour boost every 18 months to keep your liner looking fresh.

How much do permanent eyeliner tattoos cost?

The average cost of a permanent eyeliner tattoo is £395. The cost of a permanent eyeliner treatment differs by artist and clinics, so make sure to check the pricing when you book.

What to expect during a treatment?

Firstly, the area will be numbed using a topical cream. Then you will consult with your artist about your chosen style and colour of liner – there’s lots of choices when it comes to colours for permanent eyeliner, from black, blue, green, and even purple! Once you have decided this, your artist will map out your liner design using a pencil – this will allow you to make any amendments to your style before it gets tattooed on.

Once you have agreed on a style and colour, you artist will begin tattooing. They use body safe pigments and machines designed especially for treatments in this delicate area. During the process your eyelids will be numbed with a second topical cream, helping you to avoid any possible pain.

Once the treatment is over, you artist will perform an eye bath – this is when your eyes are flushed with sterile water in order to cleanse the eye of any residual ink or debris from the treatment. Once this is done, your artist will go over your aftercare and send you on your way!

Do eyeliner tattoos hurt?

Permanent eyeliner tattoos do not hurt. Most clients report a tickling sensation due to movement of the eyelashes, however thanks to continuous application of numbing in the area, there should be no pain.

Is permanent eyeliner safe?

Permanent eyeliner is perfectly safe. It is a technique that now has decades of expertise behind it, and artists are highly qualified and educated in the entire process. The wetline of the eyes and the corners are never tattooed, and the eyes are closed for the majority of the treatment.

What is the aftercare for permanent eyeliner?

There may be some discomfort and swelling in the area for the first 24 hours, however this is totally normal and will reduce if you follow the correct aftercare advice. Do not wear any eye makeup for 1 week and avoid rubbing the eye area during the healing process (4 weeks). Keep the area dry for around 5 days, and apply soothing balm as recommended by your artist.

As with other PMU treatments, it will appear that the pigment fades, however this is part of the skin healing, and the pigment will push back up to its full colour at around the 4 week mark. You’ll be due for a retouch appointment around 4-6 weeks after your first treatment to fill any gaps and make any tweaks.
