How to stay relevant in the Permanent Makeup business

The permanent makeup business is more popular than ever and there isn’t any sign of the demand for treatments easing up. In fact, demand is so high that our Training Academy is inundated with students wanting to become the next top permanent makeup artist. In today’s post, we’re giving you our top tips on how to stay relevant in the permanent makeup business.

1. Advance your training

Advancing your training not only sets you apart from the competition, but it also makes you an expert within your field. You’ll get the benefit of learning the most advanced new skills whilst adding to your treatment list and increasing your income. There are so many avenues to explore in permanent makeup that are both lucrative and extremely enriching on a personal level. Invest in your craft and invest in yourself.

2. Keep your ear to the ground

Keep your ear to the ground on industry news and advancements that you might be able to use to your advantage. Subscribe to profession-specific magazines and newsletters to keep up to date on the latest advancements – you can never have too much knowledge.

3. Check out your competition

See what others are doing within your profession and take inspiration from what’s working well for them. We’re not saying copy them – that’s a bad idea! But simply take influence from their successful practices and see how you could incorporate them into your own business to reflect your brand. For example, your competition may have an amazing facebook page full of interesting information that their clients are engaging well with. Think about how you could incorporate this into your business. Perhaps you could start a blog where you share your top tips and share them across your platforms.

4. Enter competitions to see where you sit within your market

Competitions are a great way to see where you sit within your market. They push you out of your comfort zone, keep you on your toes and allow you to network with other people within similar fields. Even if you don’t win, the experience can be fantastic and you may be surprised who you meet along the way. Competition judges are usually industry experts and can offer you valuable feedback that you can use to improve your skills and business. Who know, you may just scoop the top award!

5. Network and attend events

Networking events are great because you get to meet lots of other people with the same interests as you. Don’t see networking events as ‘meeting your competition’, see them as an opportunity to meet potential new friends and colleagues who can support and encourage you and vice versa. Remember: there is room for everyone to shine.

6. Keep practising your craft

Even if you feel that you’ve trained in all aspects that interest you, you should never stop practising your craft. Practise makes perfect and every good permanent makeup artist should be drawing every single week to keep on top of their skills.

7. Ask your clients for feedback

One of the most valuable things you can do is to ask your clients for their honest feedback. Customers are vital to your business, so asking them for their feedback is crucial. Ask them what they feel you do well, what you can improve on and what they’d like to see from you in the future. We know it can feel scary, but it’s absolutely worth it!
